amazing

What a night, huh? A landslide for Bakak Obama. Yesterday I said wake me when it’s over, because I could barely stand to watch. I was expecting a very tight, white knuckle finish. Tonight, I can’t eye my eyes off the TV.

I’m so relieved: we’re going to have leadership. Two more months of bald incompetence, then it ends. And talk about dodging a bullet; I’m convinced it could have gotten worse. John McCain has no vision of better possible futures for US, and his Tina Fey lookalike is just a joke.

Hey world, how do you like us now?

I’m happy.

wake me when it’s over

Well I’ve got my sample ballot all filled out. I’m ready to hit the polls first thing in the morning.

I plan to vote for Senators Obama and Biden. And I’ve made my choices for school board and water district too.

I haven’t posted for a while. I had a cold for a week, and was mostly watching TV and going to bed early. Colds suck. They make you feel out of it, you know? One day last week, I was working at my desk at the office, and I suddenly had this thought:

Hey, which shoes did I put on this morning? Am I wearing the oxfords, the runners, or one of each? Should I look?

That’s the kind of thinking that leaves no doubt that a guy ought to be getting more sleep, drinking more water, and taking his vitamins.

I hope you all enjoy Election Day. Get out and vote. Unless you’re a poor little moron with an itch to vote for the warmonger and the wolf hunter. Then please please stay home. We’ve had enough of that crap.

stop the war

Sent by e-mail to Congresswoman Lois Capps today:

Dear Mrs. Capps, I received your e-newsletter about ending addiction to oil. I can’t speak for my fellow constituents, but I don’t consider this a priority. If people wanted to avail themselves – and their industries – of alternative energy sources, we could and would do so. We’re burning fossil fuels, at our own peril, because we like it. It’s the American way.

Stop the war. That’s what’s killing our economy as it kills so many people. You folks in Congress could have and should have impeached that nattering incompetent, arrogant George Bush when you had the mandate and the opportunity.

Stop the war now. Don’t wait for Barak Obama’s inauguration, because it may not happen. This society is too sick and full of fear for such assumptions of sanity.

a source of terror

Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.

-Harry S. Truman, 33rd US president (1884-1972)

spoken too soon

The conscience of the world is so guilty that it always assumes that people who investigate heresies must be heretics; just as if a doctor who studies leprosy must be a leper. Indeed, it is only recently that science has been allowed to study anything without reproach. -Aleister Crowley, author (1875-1947)

Crowley didn’t anticipate the Bush administration, and its manipulative, intolerant, medieval anti-science. They’ve been nothing but obstructionist with even their own climate scientists. And Bush’s stance on stem cell research has more in common with Salem in 1692 than the America of 2008.

why women should vote

I’m breaking two general rules of Metaphor with this post: I’m getting political, and I’m posting something without attribution. But I think this, which I received by e-mail from my Mom, is an important comment on human rights.

This is the story of our Grandmothers, and Great-grandmothers, as they lived only 90 years ago. It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of “obstructing sidewalk traffic.”

They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the “Night of Terror” on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So next time I hear a woman say she doesn’t feel like bothering to vote, or that she’ll vote for McCain because Hillary didn’t win the nomination and she doesn’t like Obama, I’ll remember. Suffrage is about suffering, not about big ugly Victorian hats and long funny dresses. Women fought hard for the right to vote, which never should have been denied them in the first place. And to disrespect that right – for any of us to disrespect it – is to dishonor their memory.

2008 Economic Stimulus Package

Uncle Kyle’s e-mail of the day:

Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a HDTV set,
thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.

to my congresswoman on memorial day

Dear Mrs. Capps:

Thank you for your continued service to the South Coast. I have received your e-mail “honoring the fallen,” on Memorial Day. I believe that for a year and a half, Congress has failed to do so by taking impeachment “off the table.” It is a national disgrace. There could have been no better tribute to our fallen, of this war and every war previous, than to exercise the legal and moral imperatives of the Constitution.

Respectfully …

independents: voting problem reported

E-mail just in from Obama campaign:

Californians have reported problems voting as “Decline to State” voters, commonly referred to as “unaffiliated,” “independent” or “non-partisan” voters.

Please read this email for clarification of how “Decline to State” (DTS) voters can vote in today’s election for Barack Obama. Even if you’ve already voted, please make sure this information gets to as many voters as possible.

DTS voters have the right to vote for Barack Obama in the Democratic Presidential Primary.

DTS voters must identify themselves as DTS or non-partisan voters and ask to vote in the Democratic Presidential Primary when they arrive at their polling location. They will get instructions from a poll worker on how to vote in the Democratic Primary. If a voter gets into the voting booth and finds that he or she does not have an option to vote for Barack Obama, the voter should not cast his or her ballot. Instead, he or she should return the partially filled-out or unmarked ballot to the poll worker, and ask the poll worker to seek clarification from the supervisor at the polling location or from the County Registrar of Voters.

In Los Angeles County, DTS voters will be given a non-partisan ballot which they must take into a “Democratic” booth. They must mark both the “Democratic” bubble and the bubble for Barack Obama.

If you or anyone you know has any problems voting today, please contact the local County Registrar of Voters or one of our election protection hotlines at:
